How do termites spread in Eastern and Central Virginia?

Termites may not spread as quickly as certain pests, but their spread is certainly one of the most dangerous. So long as they have access to cellulose (the substance found in wood), termites can spread silently for months and months before being discovered. Termites are infamous for their ability to spread without being noticed. The rate and speed at which they spread depends on a number of factors that will affect their growth:
  • Presence of wood in contact with soil
  • Amount of moisture present
  • Climate and seasonal factors
  • Maturity and size of the termite colony

Does a Termite Infestation Grow Quickly?

A mature termite colony that has been growing for at least five years can consume up to a pound of wood per day. This may not seem like a lot, but this can add up over time if the infestation is not caught in time. Colonies range in size—they can contain anywhere from several hundred to thousands upon thousands of members. Queen termites can lay up to 30,000 eggs in a single day (more than 10 million in a year), which is enough to tell you that a termite colony can grow exponentially. This is why seeking immediate termite control treatments at the first sign of an infestation is so crucial.

Do Termites Spread From House to House?

If you see your neighbors have tented their property for termite treatment, it’s easy to panic. It’s not always the case, but it’s important to get an inspection if your property was built at the same time as your infested neighbors’ home. That said, termite infestations are unpredictable—just because your neighbors have termites does not mean you are sure to have them as well. As always, it’s simply best to stay on top of termite prevention and get regular inspections regardless of whether your neighbors have termite problems or not.

How Will Termites Spread into New Colonies?

Termites spread into new colonies by traveling through underground mud tubes or cracks in the walls, and by swarming to begin new colonies. Although they won’t infest an entire neighborhood, seeing your neighbor infested with termites should motivate you to invest in regular termite prevention and inspections to stay safe from the spread of termites all year long.
