How to Clean Up After Rodents in Virginia

Once your rodent infestation is dealt with, the battle’s only half over; you still need to handle the cleanup, and it’s important to handle it with care. Both living and dead rodents can spread disease and harmful bacteria – whether through their urine, droppings, or nesting materials. These pathogens can remain dangerous for a considerable period of time after the infestation is over.

How to Clean Up Rodent Droppings

Cleaning up rodent droppings is actually more hazardous than many people realize. Rodent droppings can transmit Hantavirus when particles are inhaled. Hantavirus is a very serious and potentially fatal disease. That’s why it’s so important to take proper precautions while cleaning up these droppings.

  1. Protect Yourself: Wear rubber or latex gloves and a mask – minimum N95, N100 with a HEPA filter recommended – to avoid inhaling contaminants.
  2. Create a Disinfectant: Use one part bleach and ten parts water or a pre-mixed solution.
  3. Apply the Solution: Spray the bleach solution over the contaminated area thoroughly and let sit for at least 5 minutes. This will give it time to kill any harmful pathogens.
  4. Cleanup Process: Once the time is up, clean up the solution – ideally with paper towels or disposable rags. Dispose of the towels in a sealed bag.
  5. Disinfect Further: After the primary cleanup is done, remember to disinfect surrounding areas as well. This will clean up other contaminants the rodents may have left behind.
  6. Wash Up: Don’t forget to wash your hands! Wash thoroughly with soap and water (don’t forget under your fingernails!) to kill any germs left behind.

Handling Dead Rodents or Nests

When dealing with dead rodents or their nests, follow all the same directions above; gloves and mask, bleach solution, disposable rags, and thorough washing up. The main difference is that you need to disinfect the dead rodent or nest itself before handling it.
