I’m Hunter; the only Certified K-9 Termite Detective in Central, VA; welcoming you to my blog, “What’s Buggin’ You?SM” In my first installment I introduced you to my family at Loyal Termite and Pest Control. I got a special treat (Yum, Yum), from Daddy Nick and Mama Gena because I remembered to include all of the Lupini family members in the blog. In time, I will go into more detail about them individually, as well as, each special member of our Loyal team.

I said in my first blog that in future blogs, I would discuss anything and everything associated with the termite and pest control business. Today, I turn to a key player in contributing to termite, ant, and other dwelling bug and pest infestations….Moisture!

Moisture under the house, around the foundation, in the gutters; anywhere around the perimeter or within your house is a breeding ground for problems. My training is in sniffing out termites where they can not be seen by our trained technicians. I was taught to recognize the pheromone scent of termites. Where there is moisture there may be termites or a host of other bugs. When I catch the scent of termites through a wall or barrier, I sit, get a biscuit from Daddy Nick, and keep moving. If I’m lucky I get a bunch of treats. If I get a bunch of treats, our client has a serious termite problem. Termites live and dwell in moist soil. Moisture also is a happy playground for centipedes, earwigs, ground beetles, clover mites, carpenter ants, mole crickets, house crickets, and camelback crickets (“jumpers” I call them). There are many more bugs that love moisture; however, I think you get the point. Ground moisture is also responsible for many wood foundation problems.

What to do? First, have all downspouts and splashes pointing away from the foundation. Pull mulch away from the house at least one foot and allow drying before applying new mulch. Make sure there are no leaky pipes in and around your house.

If moisture problems persist, consider giving us a call here at Loyal Termite and Pest Control (804-737-7777). Here are a few, inexpensive, Loyal solutions to some of your moisture problems. Have us install LeafDefier in your gutters. Leaves and debris will never again collect in your gutters creating a compost-like material cherished by carpenter ants, mosquitoes, and other nasty bugs. We’ll install a “moisture barrier” on the ground of your crawl space. Made of a special durable thick plastic material, our expert installers will install the barrier properly to allow breathing around the perimeter. We also can install Temp Vents to replace your old vent covers. These amazing vents work automatically, opening and closing, as determined by temperature; open on warm days to circulate air in the crawlspace, and close on cold days to preserve dwelling heat. The best foundation vents available anywhere! And finally, if your crawlspace moisture problem is severe, Loyal can set up a dehumidifier system to once and for all eliminate your crawl space moisture problem.

Well, I hope you learned a little bit today. If you have any questions; respond to this blog, give us a call, “Like” us on our facebook page, facebook.com/loyalpest, Follow us on Twitter, @loyalpest, or send us a message!
